November 4, 2009 Creating a PowerPoint Splash Screen

Today I recorded my screen as I created a PowerPoint splash screen (or title screen) for a message series by our youth pastor. This is the sort of project I do regularly at The City Church — especially for Generation Church.

I thought it would be interesting to both document and share the video:

Some notes:

  • You’ll notice a short pause after I launch Safari — it was inexplicably unresponsive.
  • I use a lot of shortcuts — especially in Photoshop — from muscle-memory. I apologize if it’s hard to follow at times.
  • I use a technique for building the title layer in order to treat it which keeps the “build” still available for editing — hence the hidden folder layer in the final document.
  • I was surprised how quick and easy it was to find a perfect (free) font for the project. I expected to have to cut out a portion of the video while I searched for the right font.

This is very cool – always fun to see how people do what they do. If you ever do any freelance projects, don’t mention that you can turn stuff around in 6 minutes. Could really hurt profitability :)

You must share that wallpaper! :) (Let’s be honest, you saw this coming.)

@sj: That’s why I can’t charge by the hour when I do freelance.

@Matthew: I actually didn’t see it coming, but now that I think about it, I’m not surprised. Here you go.

It’s always fun to see similarities in another person’s process, especially for creating title slides. Thanks for sharing this video.

P.S. I didn’t know you could transform individual points on a shape layer. Awesome!

This was totally inspiring for me. I love the way you added texture to the background – so simple for such a great effect. Also, really liked how you used a 0% fill and inner shadow on the whole canvas. I will be storing that trick for future projects.

Thanks for sharing. I’d love to see more of these in the future.
