iPhone flicking is the opposite direction of two-finger scrolling on MacBook trackpads, and as such I’m now constantly confused
I’ve had the same experience.
It’s a tactile thing. The hope is that the iPod flicking is making you feel like you are physically moving the pixel that’s under your finger whereas the scrolling is a more abstract control. This is similar to the “argument” gamers often have for or against inverted controls with a joystick. Inverting these controls is usually optional in videogames. Should Apple make this an option for the iPhone?

I’m embarrassed by how many non-iPhone devices/interfaces I’ve unconsciously tried to operate as if they have a touch screen over the last two months (yes, including my MBP).
