Apple released an update to iTunes tonight that, ahem, “addresses an issue with the Zoom button not switching to Mini Player”.
I had just gotten used to option-clicking the zoom button, too. ✓

Yeah, I agree with you, Silus. Bad habits are hard to break, though.

Switching between two modes of viewing is NOT expected behavior of the zoom/green button, and I don’t appreciate its reappearance in iTunes. Nowhere else, to my knowledge, does the z/g button do anything but toggle the size of the window to fit the screen.
