One line of code can optimize your website for iPhone, says Craig Hockenberry.
Yikes. That really sounds like proprietary code to me. Since it’s not browser-specific, it could potentially break as soon as any other browser recognizes the “viewport” meta tag. In my book, that’s no better than IE conditional comments or other nasty proprietary code. Just because it’s Apple doesn’t mean we should hold them to a lower standard. On the other hand, I would have no problem with a valid tag specifically targeting MobileSafari.

It’s not really proprietary code, as it’s completely open. Also, it’s more like custom meta data — similar to Microformats.

I realize that it isn’t exactly proprietary code. But am I wrong in asserting that as soon as some other agent decided to understand that meta tag and interpret it in a fashion differently than the iPhone that we will have a problem on our hands?
